14. How will I be notified when there is a disaster or other opportunity to volunteer?
When you register you will enter information about the best way to contact you. If a deployment is required, this is the information that the system will use to contact you. Therefore, please be sure that the information you give is accurate and up-to-date. Anytime you have any changes in that information, please log on to the DHV system and update your information.
15. How far would I have to travel?
When you register, you will have the opportunity to indicate your willingness to travel. You will be asked if you are willing to volunteer locally, within the state or even outside the state. These preferences will be considered when deployment decisions are being reached.
16. Do I notify my employer first, prior to volunteering my services?
Yes, your duty is to your employer first. It is anticipated that the vast majority of LA County DHV volunteers will be private-sector employees. It is understood that as an employee, you must attend to the needs of your organization first. The conditions under which an employee will be released to volunteer in an emergency remain between the employer and the employee.
17. Where do I report to volunteer?
You will be given information on where you are to report at the time of your assignment. Typically volunteers will be asked to check in at the volunteer reception area at the location where they are assigned. In a catastrophic disaster or disasters with significant security concerns (such as a terrorist incident) volunteers may be asked to report to volunteer mobilization centers in Los Angeles County first to check in and receive an assignment prior to deploying to a particular location.
